Inspiration

I was writing pieces of music at the time so I can't quite remember whether the music came first for this one (I think it must have been at least partially complete), but I know that the lines: "Think you can take us overnight? You'd best be ready for a fight" were the central hook that everything else was built around.  I remember hearing or reading some comment Vladimir Putin made about how he thought this invasion of Ukrainian territory would end swiftly.   The uncertainty everyone in the Ukraine must have been feeling just resonated with me as I'm sure it did many.  They responded, and continue to respond, with defiance and immense courage.

Think you can take us overnight? You'd best be ready for a fight...

What It's About

It's about conflict - a storm of fire and blood.  It really could be about any similar conflict of the past, present, or future in which a nation minding their own business is invaded by a larger foe.  The notion of a 'red storm' - gosh this really dates me - initially came from me imagining a storm of soldiers from what was formerly the Soviet Red Army is what locked in the title.  Naturally, the 'red army' no longer exists but I retained the title as it works more generally as well.  The weather metaphor falls apart pretty quickly from a storm straight into more traditional weapons of kinetic war.

Other Notes

To honour the source of inspiration for this song, the single cover art bears the Ukrainian flag at its foundation.  It deviates from the aesthetic theme of every other single, and from the album, Working Class Outcast, itself.   The release date of September 30 was chosen in anticipation of Ukrainian Defenders Day, celebrated annually on October 1 in remembrance of the fallen soldiers and military veterans.

As of the time of this writing (Oct 3, 2025) Ukraine is still actively engaged in conflict with Russia.

I want to be clear that this song in no way promotes war or violence.  I, along with what I believe is most of the world, hope that a peaceful resolution will be expedited.
